Being a Nerd 101

So, you want to be a nerd?
In today's new society with cellphones, iPods, laptops, and everyone playing video games, it is apparent that being a nerd is IN. There is nothing wrong with being a nerd, although socially awkward, most nerds are intelligent people.
This article will go over several things on introducing you to nerdism;
- What is a Nerd
- Dressing Like a Nerd
- Walking the Walk...
- Talking the Talk.
- The Mentality of Being Nerdy
Not everything nerdy will be introduced here, since there are many forms of nerds, this hub will cover the most basic.
What is a Nerd
Nerd: –nounSlang. 1. a stupid, irritating, ineffectual, or unattractive person. 2. an intelligent but single-minded person obsessed with a nonsocial hobby or pursuit: a computer nerd. Dictionary.com Unabridged
Based on the Random House Dictionary, © Random House, Inc. 2010.
That is the dictionary definition, which is not too different from the street definition, which can basically be described as "Someone who is smarter than most people, usually kept on technology and tabletop games, and can't get in a relationship since they are so nerdy." Even though there is a lot of bad press about being a nerd, slowly people's definitions of it are changing more and more people are becoming nerds.
Growing up, people have always been told that if someone likes Star Trek, it made them a nerd... however there are people who are not called nerds who have the same love of something else as others have for Star Trek. Then it was music stars and other celebrities, and now it's Twilight and Avatar. Anyone that fans over anything is a nerd.
Nerds are sometimes people who are amazingly brilliant. However their intelligence makes them hard to socialize with. These are people who connect with numbers in ways that normal people cannot even begin to imagine.
Too sum it up, here is a list of the most common types of nerds:
- Sci-Fi Nerds
Nerds who like anything that fall into sci-fi. They break off into dub groups such as Trekkies, Scientologists, and Jedis. The newest sub-group is Avatards, the nerd fan mob of the movie Avatar. - Fantasy Nerds
These are the kinds of nerds that love anything elf, dwarf, or orc. Lord of the Rings is a famous series with this group as well as the table top game Dungeon and Dragons. - Music Nerds
These nerds love music, they are your wanna-be-rappers to your music fans. These people know everything there is to know about a singer, genera, or song writer.

Dressing like a nerd isn't hard to do, as it is basically dressing in any fashion that isn't fashion. Nerds usually dress in three categories;
- Comfortable Dressings
Band T-shirts, t-shirts with their favorite TV shows characters, t-shirts with their favorite movie characters (like Edward Cullen from Twilight), loose pants or shorts, basically anything - Out-of-style
Nerds will sometimes wear a fashion that is so outdated it is scary - In style, bad fashion
We all know the kind of people who will take a style and wear it wrong, thus killing it for everyone.
Now, some of these outfits could be worn by anyone--like that girl you always see at the mall in her late 20's who think it's cute to wear pajama pants at the mall. The next thing that should stop anyone from thinking you're a bum at the mall is...
Walking the Walk
There isn't much about walking you need to learn when walking like a nerd. Nerds just have an air about them that says they are a nerd. They are a tad more socially withdrawn than most and wont walk out into a large group of people. They will--depending on the type of nerd--either walk on the sidewalk, or walk in the shadows.
However, anyone who knows a nerd knows that nerds hardly walk to begin with.
Talking the Talk
Nerds are famous for the way they talk. Nasally or raspy voices, and that iconic almost intolerable laugh. However, with nerds, what they talk about is much more important than how they say it:
- The latest video game, or video games in general
- Fantasy Novel, or any book in general
- Talking for weeks about a concert they saw with a band when they were six
- Newest scientific finding
- Space
- Puns
There are many different things that come out of mouths of nerds, just as there are the different types. However, the most important thing if puns. Puns are supposed to make you want to cry... and they are the humor of nerds! Talking the talk means ripping constant puns to the point no one wants to talk to you any more.
The Mentality of Being Nerdy
Nerds think differently, than everyone else. They see humor in weird things, and most are insecure about things, and they cover it up with fandoms about other worlds, or the future. The biggest part of being a nerd is where the nerd "goes" to be secure. Is it the world of comic books, or the world of L.R. Hubbard, or the studies of science?
Being a nerd isn't easy, and it isn't just ONE thing that makes someone a nerd. It takes more than just waking up and going "I think I will be a nerd today!" It takes planing, knowing something--like Pokemon--so well that you own all the Pokemon cards and can tell you the names of all the Pokemon, and can recall every line in every show ever!
